AFN Network+ becomes Root and Reason, the food resilience collective

As you may be aware, AFN was funded for a fixed period by UK Research and Innovation – and that period has come to an end. Instead of winding down, however, the team is redoubling its efforts. We want to help build a resilient food system that is prepared, empowered, and equitable, where change happens with people, not to them.

Root and Reason is an independent, non-profit initiative, connecting people at all levels, across sectors, disciplines and demographics, and empowering them with the robust evidence they need to make informed decisions.

Bringing together policymakers, businesses, front-line services and community groups, we are working towards:

  • creation of shared plans to fix systemic failings and cope with disruption;
  • ensuring clear accountability for outcomes; and
  • giving voice to the communities most affected.

We aim to put readiness, accountability and justice at the heart of UK food system transformation – helping design and implement systemic change that works.

We’ll still be sharing the same newsletters, digests, events, reports & collaboration opportunities with our email subscribers, and you’ll be the first to know about all the exciting things we have planned.

The AFN website will continue to archive our work until February 2027, but all our key content – including the Roadmap and scenarios report, back catalogue of briefings, digests and webinars – is available on our new website here.
